Most people know that solar energy is produced by converting sunlight into electrical energy, but many people are unfamiliar with just exactly how solar energy works. There is a definite lack of knowledge about this subject partly because solar energy is not as widely used as other forms of energy.
It would be great if one of the cable TV science channels would produce a documentary showing exactly how solar energy works! Even better would be an intensive learning course in our public elementary or high schools covering how solar energy works. However, I don't think we should hold our breath waiting for either of those to happen any time soon. This article though will try to dispel some of the most common myths and misconceptions surrounding the subject of how solar energy works.
Why it is Important to Understand How Solar Energy Works
The most beneficial reason to dispel the myths about how solar energy works is because once the facts are known the popularity of solar energy as a form of alternative energy will increase. Although there are those who might dismiss this as a not-so-subtle endorsement for the solar energy industry, it is really an effort to bring to light the specific scientific facts about solar energy. Once the facts are known, informed individuals can make their own decision as to whether or not to use solar energy. With the key word here being “informed” as opposed to someone making an emotional decision without having an educated basis upon which to make a decision.
Solar Energy – A Definition
Our sun is a colossal source of energy that produces an enormous amount of energy. Much of this energy reaches the earth in the sun's rays. Solar panels are able to capture this energy and convert it into electrical energy. While the actual process of converting solar energy into electricity is a complex process requiring a deep knowledge of physics, the basic knowledge that solar energy can be converted into electrical energy should be enough for most people to know about how solar energy works.
In the end, it is more important to know that solar energy actually does work rather than knowing exactly how solar energy works. As long as solar energy works as promised and delivers clean and cost effective energy, people will enthusiastically support the solar energy movement and, with any luck, will encourage it.
